\u00ab Je me souviens<\/strong> \u00bb<\/em> (i.e. I remember<\/em><\/span><\/span>Je me souviens<\/em> is the official motto of Quebec, a province of Canada. (Wikipedia)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>) is a documentary that tries to understand why Quebec nationalism drifted onto the swampy terrain of anti-Semitism and fascism in the 1930s and 40s \u2026 but also why some Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois today refuse to come to terms with the sorry past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film tells the story of Esther Delisle<\/a>, a Qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise academic who became “Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s Nasty Girl<\/a>“. because of her research into forbidden territory. In 1991, she wrote a doctoral thesis<\/a> proving that anti-Semitism and pro-fascist sympathies were deeply rooted among the French-Canadian nationalist elite of the 1930s and 1940s.<\/p>\n\n\n

According to Delisle’s thesis, Lionel Groulx, the key figure in modern Quebec nationalism, was swayed by the anti-Semitic and ethnocentric ideologies of Charles Maurras<\/a> and the French Far-Right between the First and Second World Wars. Le Devoir<\/a>, the renowned Montr\u00e9al daily followed Groulx’s ideological direction in paying tribute to the fascist dictators of the time – Salazar, Franco, Mussolini and P\u00e9tain – and becoming a voice of hate against the Jews. There is no doubt that these revelations still reverberate within Quebec\u2019s nationalist community.<\/p>\n

We go back in time to hear testimonies from people who lived through these decades but also from historians and intellectuals who examined this dark period, sometimes drawing different conclusions.
